Washington D.C. – This week, Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Mark Pocan filed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to block the transfer of a $735 million weapons sale between Boeing and the Israeli government. JVP Action is proud to endorse this amendment.
This sale includes the same types of bombs used by the Israeli government in its May 2021 military assault on Gaza that caused the deaths of at least 256 Palestinians, including 66 children, and injured 1,948. According to reports from the AP and The New York Times, these weapons were used in the bombing of the al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza, which killed 44 Palestinians in one night – the single deadliest incident of May’s hostilities.
The NDAA amendment comes in the wake of Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, Pocan, and Sen. Sanders’ historic opposition to the weapons sale in May, and is in line with the demand from over 100 civil society organizations to the Biden administration last June to halt the weapons transfer.
“Last May, the Israeli government used Boeing-made bombs to kill 44 Palestinians in one night in the neighborhood of al-Rimal, just one of the many deadly attacks during Israel’s 11-day military assault that killed 256 people. This is a massacre in which the U.S. is directly complicit. Human rights champions like Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, and Pocan are showing that they will not continue to allow the free flow of U.S. bombs to Israel. The message from House progressives is clear: The time of Israeli impunity is over.”
